I absolutely love train travel and have experienced many versions of it.
From rustic rail cars in India to the most luxurious in Peru, the options are endless. There are sooo many luxurious train journeys to choose from, where the rail journey IS the vacation. Let’s talk about a few of my faves.
First stop, the Venetian Simplon-Orient-Express! This beautiful Art Deco train travels across Europe, made of polished wood and gorgeous Laliquie glass. From white glove service to dedicated butler service, you’ll live the rail life of luxury.
The Blue Train in South Africa connects Cape Town with Pretoria and is a great complement to a safari. It’s a 2-night journey of nearly 1000 miles, crossing through some of the most diverse and spectacular scenery. A personal butler tends to your wishes and panoramic windows showcase a world of African plains.
Closer to home, the Rocky Mountaineer travels across Canada. Many Mangata clients have experienced this luxurious journey, often beginning in Banff and ending in Vancouver. It’s the perfect way to experience the Rockies and Western Canada.
Have you heard of the Ghan? It’s a hidden gem, a legendary train journey that slices through the heart of Australia. From Darwin’s tropical charm down to the rustic plains of Adelaide, the Ghan is an epic way to experience Australia.
And my very favorite rail experience? The Hiram Bingham from Cuzco to Machu Picchu is one of my best travel memories ever. It’s like being plucked from the pages of a 1920s travelogue and placed onto the tracks of Peruvian dramatic landscapes. A live band, pisco sours and the most beautiful railcar created one for the books.
I like to say ‘dare to dream differently’ and planning a luxury rail journey certainly embodies this strategy. Where tracks turn into tales and scenery into sonnets, luxury train travel is pure splendor.
